As we all try and keep the COVID-19 at bay, it is easy to forget about your septic system. As we are spending more time at home, there is an increase in water usage, a multitude of meals being prepared at home, means the dishwasher has run more often, as well as the garbage disposal and washing machine.

What can you do to protect your septic system?

Reducing the stress on your septic tank can go a long way in safeguarding it against problems. Here are a few recommendations to help decrease the risk.

Never flush disinfection or personal wipes down the toilet. Make sure they are disposed of properly in the garbage.

Try and minimize the amount of disinfectant and bleach that goes down the drain. They often disrupt the good bacteria in the tank.

Instead of using powder laundry detergent, use liquid. Unfortunately, powder detergents down always dissolve completely and can travel all the way from the washing machine to the septic tank and end up clogging the lines going to the drain field.

Wash your hands with regular soap. Many soaps today contain harsh antibacterial agents, for the microbes in the septic tank these are toxic.

When doing the laundry, make sure you have a full load,  instead of doing several smaller loads.

If you have a garbage disposal, use it minimally, if at all. They increase the amount of organic material that ends up in your septic tank.

Take showers instead of baths. Showers use significantly less water, especially if you limit the time.

Repair any water leaks. A small water drip or leaking toilet flapper, can waste hundreds of gallons of water that has to be processed through the septic system.

If you don’t know the last time your system was inspected or septic tank was pumped or it has been a while, you probably need to have it done.

Waiting too long can cause significant, costly damage

Protect your investment! The small price of pumping the tank can avoid the thousands of dollars on repairs, many of which could have been prevented.
