The COVID-19 pandemic has led to serious septic system problems here in Central Florida. But with people staying home more, making more meals, washing their hands often, and sanitizing surfaces with antibacterial products, has taken its toll on our septic systems.

Here at Orlando Septic Services, we’ve gotten many phone calls, from slow drains, waste water backing up into their bathtub, toilets making strange gurgling sounds, and foul odors.

How can you prevent these types of septic issues?

Conserve water when you can. This means doing only full loads of laundry, only run the dishwasher when it’s full, and turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.

Be mindful of what you flush down the toilet and put down the drain. You definitely don’t want to put any grease, fats, or oils down the drain. Also, don’t flush any types of wipes, even if it says they are safe for septic systems or flushable.

Remember all those antibacterial products you are using, soaps and cleaners, kill the good bacteria in the septic tank.

What to do if you suspect your septic system is having trouble?

If you notice your drains aren’t as quick as they used to be, your pipes or toilet is making a gurgling sound, the drain field in your yard is soft and mushy, there is a puddle of water over the septic tank, or smelling odors that aren’t good, all indicate there is a problem. The quicker the issue is addressed, the easier it usually is on the wallet. There is no doubt, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will become.
