Septic system problems here in Orlando can definitely wreak havoc on your life. But, by arming yourself with knowledge you can make an informed decision and even save a few bucks.
Every three to five years, septic tanks need to be pumped
If out of sight out of mind, describes the way you take care of your septic tank, then you may be in for a big surprise. Neglecting routine septic tank pumping can put your whole system at risk. It may start out as gurgling toilets, slow drains, and odd smells, all the time, you don’t see the damage it’s doing to your septic system.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “The average household septic system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional. Household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Alternative systems with electrical float switches, pumps, or mechanical components should be inspected more often, generally once a year. A service contract is important since alternative systems have mechanized parts.”
The size of your septic tank and water usage in the home, can shorten this time frame.
Layers of your septic tank
From the moment water enters your tank, it separates into layers. The heavy particles will sink to the bottom of the tank and form sludge, lighter solids, fats, oils, and grease, float to the top. The water that ends up in the middle, eventually (waste water) goes into the drain field.
The longer the layers are able to accumulate, the less room there is for water. If not pumped out, the system can get clogged with backed-up sludge. Which can cause toilets to gurgle, drains to run slow, and sludge to back-up into your bathtub. It can also lead to decreased functionality, costly repairs and even replacement of your drain field.
