If your Orlando area home has a septic system, do you know if your homeowners insurance will cover it if waste water starts backing up into your home, there are puddles over the drain field, or a very foul odor.

What Insurance Companies Cover

Typically, insurance policies cover plumbing features and pipes inside the home. Sudden pipes bursting, defective pumps that cause the toilet to back up or damage from malfunctioning pipes, are usually covered. Damage done from lack of maintenance, cleaning, repairs or normal wear and tear is not usually covered.

Limitations

Most homeowner’s insurance policies don’t cover any ‘features’ outside the home’s foundation. Since most of the septic systems are under the ground, it isn’t considered part of your home.

If your insurance adjuster feels you didn’t provide the proper maintenance and this was the cause of the damage, they normally won’t cover the expenses to fix it and your claim will probably be denied.

There are exceptions, such as a defective seal causing the septic tank to rupture, depending on the policy itself, part of the damages may be covered, but they generally don’t cover repairing the damage or the cost of repairing the tank.

What It Boils Down To

Basically, it comes down to if you keep your septic system regularly pumped and maintained the odds are you won’t have to make an insurance claim. If you don’t keep up with the maintenance on your septic system and something happens, your insurance company probably won’t cover it.

For example, if you notice your yard is soggy from your drainage field, though you may have just noticed, it occurred over an extended period of time and probably wouldn’t be covered.
