Here are a list of do’s and don’t for your septic system

GuaranteeDon’t Allow Down Your Drains

No Grease- Including heavy cream, wax, cheese, butter or fats.
No excess food waste or coffee grounds.
No Liquid Waste-including oils, paint thinners, solvents, paints, household chemicals, bleach, drain cleaners or pesticides.

Don’t Flush Down the Toilet

Nothing other paper than toilet paper- including paper towels, napkins, baby wipes, facial towels, gauze, matches and dental floss.
No plastic- band-aids, wrappers, and feminine products.
No coffee grounds, hair clippings, pet waste, kitty litter, solvents, food, toffee grounds.
A good rule of thumb-Don’t flush anything except toilet tissue and humane waste.

A septic tank needs to be professionally pumped every three to five years. Regular pumping removes solids front the tank. If not solids from the tank can end up in the drain field, clogging the soil and end up costing tons of money to repair.

Some symptoms of your septic tank needing to be pumped or your drain field failing include:

Drains are backing up or slow.
The grass over the drain field is wet when it hasn’t been raining.
Foul odor coming from the drains or outside.

Outdoor precautions a home or business owner should take

Trees, especially those with shallow roots, should be planted 100 feet or further from the septic system. Water from roof gutters, foundation drains and landscaping should be facing away from the septic system.
