If your Central Florida home has a clogged drain, what do you do? Whether it is the sound of a gurgling toilet or water engulfing your feet when you take a shower, it’s easy to assume the worst.
Picking up a commercial drain cleaner may sound like a good solution, however they come with a host of their own problems. Unfortunately, the products usually do more harm and cause more problems to your pipes and the environment. They are toxic to ground water, corrode pipes and damaging the sink/tub itself, to being detrimental to septic systems.
So, who do you call, a septic service or plumber?
Here is a quick way to determine which one you need. Do you have more than one drain clogged or backing up? If you have more than one, then it is typically a septic related problem.
Check the clean-out on your septic tank
It can be found between your home and the septic tank. While sometimes it can be level to the ground, it is often a short pipe made from PVC sticking out from the ground.
If you notice any standing water when you remove the cap, you probably need a septic service. Standing water is a sign of a blockage preventing wastewater from passing through or the septic tank is overflowing.
How many drains are slow or backing up?
If it is just one, it is probably a plumber. If you have several fixtures with issues or the ones closest to the ground or septic tank, you may need a septic service.
The age of the septic system
Unfortunately, septic systems don’t last forever. If yours is on the older side, 15 to 25 years, you may need the septic service. Of course, it depends on the size of the tank, how many people living in the home and water usage. If the system is newer, less than 5 years old, you may want to call a plumber.
