The drain field is one of the most vital parts of the septic system, when it is compromised with waste it may have to be dug up and replaced. Though this costly repair can often be avoided with regular septic tank pumping and maintenance, other times it is just unavoidable. Unfortunately, they don’t last forever and eventually need replacing.

Your septic system should also be inspected the plumbing associated with the tank for any leaks, the filters and valves in the tank and drain field.

Here are few things to consider when replacing or installing a drain field.

Type of Soil

For the best possible outcome, take into consideration the what type of soil is on the property. Make sure it is equipped to safely release wastewater into the soil and eventually back into the water system. The Montana State University Extension Service explains the soils role in the septic process.

“The soil filters the effluent as it passes through the pore spaces. Chemical and biological processes treat the effluent before it reaches groundwater, or a restrictive layer, such as hardpan, bedrock, or clay soils. These processes work best where the soil is somewhat dry and permeable, and contains plenty of oxygen for several feet below the drain field. The size and type of drainfield depends on the estimated daily wastewater flow and soil conditions.”

Size of the Drain Field

Will the drain field need to accommodate the water usage of a family of four or a business? This will certainly affect not only the size, but also the cost.

“The drainfield consists of long underground perforated pipes or tiles connected to the septic tank. The network of pipes is laid in gravel-filled trenches (2–3 feet wide), or beds (over 3 feet wide) in the soil. Liquid waste or effluent flows out of the tank and is evenly distributed into the soil through the piping system. The soil below the drain-field provides the final treatment and disposal of the septic tank effluent.”

Location of the Drain Field

The soil type and size play a considerable factor in the location of the drain field. To ensure it continues to work effectively for years to come, it’s important it won’t be affected by weather patterns or landscaping choices.
