There are two different ways to treat household waste water in Central Florida, aerobic and anaerobic. Both septic systems have the important job of treating all the waste water from your home, toilets, laundry, bath, showers, kitchen, and takes it to a water tight tank. Waste water leaves the home through pipes leading to the septic tank.
Anaerobic Septic System
The most common septic tank in the Orlando area works anaerobically, there is little to no oxygen in the water. The heavier solids sink to the bottom of the tank while the lighter materials such as oils, grease, and fat, float to the top. The septic tank is designed to hold the water (retention time), giving the solids time to sink and lighter matter to float. The bacteria that live in the septic system works slowly and needs time to do its job. Doing several loads of laundry in one day disrupts the delicate cycle and can allow some solids or dirty water to end up in the drain field. Many household cleaners such as bleach and those that claim to kill bacteria will agitate the water in the tank.
The solid waste stays in the septic tank, eventually this needs to be pumped out, while the water leaves the tank through a main drain pipe which branches off into several perforated pipes in the drain field. Seeping into the ground where waste water is cleaned by soil microbes. The drain field is one of the most expensive parts of the structure and when it is compromised with waste has to be dug up and replace.
