The two types of septic systems commonly used in Central Florida are anaerobically septic system (which is more communal used) and aerobic treatment unit. Both systems are a significant investment and need routine maintenance to function properly. Last week we discussed the basics of the traditional anaerobically system to gain a better understand of wastewater treatment, but the aerobic system may be a better fit for your situation.

An alternative to the conventional septic system is the aerobic treatment unit (ATU), basically a small municipal sewage plant that can be used in almost any situation. The Aerobic system uses an environment which is rich in oxygen for organisms to reduce organic waste.

This significantly reduces any solids from entering the aerobic chamber, reducing clogs and malfunctions. The wastewater then enters a chamber where oxygen is forced into the system, increasing the beneficial bacteria which breaks down and consumes any solids.

The solids not consumed by the bacteria enters a clarifying chamber where they settle and the water receives final treatment with a highly concentrated tablet form of chlorine when it is moved into the pumping chamber.

The end result is a superior effluent quality which can be discharged into the leach field or even directly to the surface, reducing ground pollution.

Although the initial investment for the Aerobic system may be a little higher than the conventional system, there are several advantages: A higher level of treatment, protects the precious water where conventional systems cannot working properly, reduces ammonia discharge, only requires a small drain field and may have a longer lifespan than the traditional septic tank.
