Our afternoon showers have arrived. While it is great for our yard and landscape, not so much for your septic system. Excess water can saturate the leach or drain field, creating havoc and just about impossible for the drain field to absorb any more water.
Signs your drain field is failing
The waste water leaving your home goes through the septic tank where it is separated, the solids going to the bottom, grease and oils going to the top, and the waste water in the middle is filtered into the drain field.
Unfortunately, during heavy rains the drain field can become oversaturated. When this happens the waste water has nowhere to go, it can then end up traveling backward through the pipes and back into your home.
If you notice any of these signs, it is time to contact a professional septic service.
Foul smells around the drain field
Toilets not flushing properly or gurgling
Wet soil or bass above the drain field
Patches of lush, greener grass over the drain field
Protect your drain field
A septic system that is well maintained is better equipped to handle extreme weather. Here are a few ways you can protect your drain field.
Pump your septic tank
To ensure your septic tank is in good condition it should be pumped on a regular basis, every 2 to 5 years. It is a good idea to have it pumped before the rainy season starts.
Reduce water usage
Try to limit the water usage, the number of loads of laundry, dishwashing and lengthy showers. This can give your drain field a chance to dry out.
Redirect the gutters
Make sure your gutters and down spouts are not pointed towards the drain field or septic tank. This extra water can lead to flooding.
