02/01/2017  When was the last time you even thought about your Central Florida septic tank? If you’re thinking, since it doesn’t show signs of any problems, it must be fine. By the time your waste management system has problems, whether it is a foul odor, waste water backing up in the bathtub, or even slow drains, it may end up costing a small fortune to repair or even replace.

“That’s because almost half of all household septic tanks failed inspections and more than half of those failures were due to people not de-sludging their tanks.” Consumers Affairs.

It works 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Everything that goes down the drain and toilet ends up in the septic tank, this includes everything from the garbage disposal, cooking grease, sinks, washing machine, showers, sand the kids bring home from the beach and the water and dirt from mopping the floors.

Typically septic systems need to be pumped out every three to five years. Depending on how many people live in the home and water consumption.

Consumers Affairs goes on to say,”To prevent buildup, sludge and floating scum you will need to do periodic pumping of the septic tank. You should do the pumping every 3-5 years. Systems with electrical float switches, pumps, or mechanical components need to be inspected more often.”

Inspection of the system is just as important as pumping the tank. “Septic system inspections should be performed on an annual basis to ensure proper function. The septic tank is the most expensive household fixture and its lifespan will be shortened significantly if it is not maintained,” according to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors.
