Last weeks blog we talked about a few things we let wash down the drain or flush down the toilet that can wreak havoc on our plumbing pipes and septic system.

Here are a few other items that should never be put down the drain.

Coffee grounds

Even those that end up in the bottom of your coffee cup, build up and can contribute to big backups. Coffee grounds are one of the most common causes of clogged drains.

Flushable products

Though many wipes and even cat litter claim to be ‘flushable’, they can still cause big problems and clogged drains when they go down the drain or toilet. Wipes don’t break down properly, get caught on other debris in pipes. Cat litter is very absorbent and keeps doing its job even in the pipes.

Paper

Toilet paper is the only paper produce that should go down the toilet or drain. It is especially designed to disintegrate in water. Other products such as cotton balls and paper towels are very absorbent, clogging pipes very easily.

Cleaning products and paint

Though they are both liquid, cleaning products contain antibacterial agents, phosphates, and other hazardous compounds that are dangerous to our pipes, septic system and ecosystem. The same goes for paint, many cities have facilities where you can safely dispose of unused paint for free.

Rice and pasta

Rice and pasta (made from flour) seem small enough to go right through pipes without any problems, but they both keep absorbing liquid, turning into a huge sticky mess in your pipes that is difficult to break down.

Do you have a problem with clogged pipes? You are not alone!

No matter how hard we try, our drains still become slow and even clogged, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. The most effective, affordable and popular course of action is high pressure jetting. Not only is it safer for older pipes it is far less caustic than traditional drain cleaners and doesn’t introduce corrosive materials into the plumbing system.
