Whether your home is in Seminole, Volusia, Lake, or Osceola county, the septic tank typically needs to be pumped out every 3 to 5 years. Depending on how many people live in the residence and how much water is used.

Septic and Plumbing Backups Can Have Similar Signs

The first step in troubleshooting is to understand the symptoms

Problems such as backups in the bath tub, drains that are slow, toilets not flushing properly, or making gurgling sounds, are all  signs that are typically considered a septic problem, but could also be a plumbing issue.

How To Tell the Difference

If you feel comfortable, check the sewage clean out. Typically this is located just to the exterior wall, close to a bathroom. It is usually under some grass or bushes. You may need a professional to help find it for you. If the sewage clean out is full, it indicates a problem with the septic system.  If it is clear, it may be your something with the pipes.

Septic Tank Level

Check the ground around the septic tank and drainfield for any puddles or wet ground. For safety reasons, it is always best to have a professional septic service open the septic tank itself to check the level of the tank. The gases from the tank are dangerous and can be overwhelming. They contain noxious fumes which can cause rapid asphyxiation and even death.

Problems can be caused by an overloaded septic tank, a malfunctioning drainfield, or the septic screen can be clogged. If you suspect you have a septic problem, refrain from using a lot of water until you have a professional look at the system.

Your septic system is an important infrastructure of your home, it is also a big investment. If properly maintained it can have a life span of over 20 years.
