How often should I have my septic tank pumped out, is a common question we get here at Orlando Septic Services. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t cut and dry. There are a few factors that play a role.
The job of the septic system is to treat wastewater. It does this by collecting all the water used in the home or business. This means water that goes down the kitchen and bathroom sinks, used by the washing machine, shower, bathtub, and toilets. All the water goes into the septic tank, where it is separated by gravity, solids sink to the bottom, oils and scum to the top.
The partially treated wastewater in the middle flows into a distribution box, then to a series of drain field trenches. This is where the secondary treatment takes place, removing toxins and safely allowing the water to return to the ground.
The solid waste and scum accumulate over time and the naturally occurring bacteria will start the decomposing process. What’s left is sludge, that will need to be pumped out before it gets filtered into the drain field or starts backing up into the bathtub.
How Often Should Your Septic Tank Be Pumped?
Generally, your septic tank should be pumped at least once every three years. But there are a few factors to consider, how many people living in your home, do you use a garbage disposal, have a lot of visitors, or kids who come home to do their laundry. All this can add to the accumulation of waste in the tank.
It is better to have the septic tank pumped out sooner than later.
Waiting until your septic shows signs of stress, toilet gurgling, back-ups, foul odor, wet areas over the drain field, can mean expensive repairs.
