When you’re having a problem with your septic system in Orange or Seminole Counties it’s vital to understand the terminology when you’re speaking to a Septic Service Company. Below are some essential terms relating to waste water treatment and operation.
Drain Field: The ground near the septic tank where wastewater is safely absorbed into the ground. The drain field are lines of trenched distribution cells, perforated polyvinyle chloride pipes (PVC), which are buried in gravel and covered in dirt, so the water encompasses the entire space. The PVC tubing reaches from the distribution box at the septic tan and evenly distributes the wastewater among the different cells.
Effluent Water: The wastewater that enters the septic tank eventually passes through a filter which prevents any solid material from entering the drain field. The filter leads to the distribution box where it flows into the distribution cells.
Influent Water: Raw Sewage that enters the septic tank before it is filtered into the drain field.
Black Water: Influent water containing human waste.
Gray Water: Water that enters the septic tank that does not contain human waste, from dishwasher, bathtubs, showers and washing machine.
Aerobic Bacteria: this Bacteria is used to reduce organic waste and decompose sewage in the septic tank, it requires oxygen to survive. Aeration chambers is used to keep sufficient amount of oxygen in the septic system.
Septic Tank: The tanks are made from steel, fiberglass, cement or plastic, it holds the wastewater that must be separated and digested. The solid remains are a layer of sludge on the bottom as the water rises and enters the settling chamber where it is chemically treated and enters the distribution box as effluent water.
