ThinkstockPhotos-523086555-2How often should you have your system inspected and tank pumped? According to the Southwest Florida Water Management District:

Septic systems are often taken for granted because they are out of sight and out of mind. Proper operation and maintenance of your septic system can save you money, protect your family’s health and protect your watershed.
Having your septic system inspected regularly (at least every 2 to 3 years) is a bargain when you consider the cost of replacing the entire system. Your system will need pumping (generally every 3 to 5 years), depending on how many people live in the house and the size of the system. An unusable septic system or one in disrepair will lower your property value and could pose a legal liability.

What else can you do to maintain your septic system?

Use water efficiently: On average, each person uses 70 gallons of water a day. Dripping faucets and leaky toilets can several gallons of water a day.  The less water you use, the less water enters the septic tank.

Be mindful of what you flush down the toilet: Lots of stuff ends up going down the drain or being flushed down the toilet, many of which can be damaging to the septic system. Cat litter, coffee grounds, dental floss, diapers, feminine products, cotton swabs, and household chemicals, gasoline, paint, pesticides, can destroy the delicate balance within the septic system.

Poor maintenance is usually the cause of a failing septic system, if you suspect a problem with your septic system or it is time for your septic tank to be pumped, contact the Orlando Septic Service.
