In light of the recent blue-green algae outbreak on Florida’s coast, it has been suggested failing septic tanks are partially to blame. In a recent news report Gov. Rick Scott said, a major contributor to the pollution in our waterways is septic tank runoff, sewage systems, and lack of appropriate maintenance.

Although septic systems, designed to treat household waste, are intended for long term use, they break down over time. Lack of proper maintenance, structural problems, tree roots growing into the pipes, and deterioration, all play a big role.

Sand and Gravel Drainage SystemA failing septic system is when the drain field is not working correctly. The septic tank is settling chamber.  Waste water from your home goes into the tank, scum and solids are separated.  While the liquid goes into the drain field. If the system isn’t properly maintained the solids and scum form a very thick layer, this doesn’t allow for enough space for the waste water entering the tank to properly settle and ends up overflowing into the drain field. Not only can this end up clogging the pipes, cause drains and toilet to back up and a foul smell emanate, it can also be a health hazard as untreated wastewater enters the ground end up in our lakes and drinking water.

Also, using a lot of water in a short amount of time, may not give the solids and scum enough time to settle, waste water can end up in the drain field or back up into your home.

Failing septic systems have been linked to threatening our water ways. State health officials estimates, out of Florida’s 2.6 million septic tanks, 10 percent are failing.
