With all the recent rain in Central Florida, your septic system may be feeling the heat. With hurricane season underway, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Septic system problems tend to arise during heavy rainfall. If you hear your toilet going ‘bloop, bloop, bloop’ or the drains gurgling, it’s time to contact Orlando Septic Services.
Septic issues can be further complicated if the septic pump’s power source is close to the ground. In the event of a flood, the outlet should be at least 18 inches from the ground. If not the outlet and pump could be at risk for shorting out.
“When that happens, the pump stops working and you’re left with a backup of wastewater that can flow back out of your sink and toilet. Fortunately, a lot of the new septic systems are equipped with an alarm to alert you when something is not working properly, according to a recent article in News 4
If the electrical outlet for your septic pump is close to the ground and you anticipate a strong storm or hurricane that may cause flooding, to prevent a short, you may want to turn off the septic pump.
Central Florida’s afternoon thunderstorms can quickly flood the ground around your drain field, making it difficult for the water in the septic tank to flow into the absorption area. With nowhere to go, the waste water can flow back into your home or business.
Ensure your septic system is healthy and in good shape before the rainy season is in full swing. Problems seem to become amplified with a significant amount of rain, make sure the system is maintained and the tank has been pumped.
If you notice your system has started to back up, the drains are slow, the toilets are making strange sounds and are slow to flush, you want to relieve pressure on the system by reducing water usage until the drain field dries out. Avoid doing the laundry or dishwasher during this time.
If you suspect a problem with your septic system, whether residential or commercial, don’t hesitate to contact Orlando Septic Services. We are here help you with all your waste management needs!
