thinkstockphotos-497938448When it comes to septic tanks in Central Florida, water conservation is key. Not only how much you use, but also when it is being used. Just by taking a few easy steps you can increase its longevity and how well it functions. In the long run conserving water can end up saving you more than just the cost of the water, but headaches because of dealing with septic problems.

The goal of the septic tank is to separate the incoming waste water into three separate layers. Sinking to the bottom are the heavy solids to form a layer of sludge. The top layer contains lighter solids such as grease, oils, fats, and toilet paper, this all ends up forming a layer of scum by being trapped by a baffle or outlet tee. The clear liquid is in the center forms the third layer and goes on to the secondary treatment, drain field.

The Importance of Retention Time

How long the waste water is allowed to stay in the tank is the retention time. You want the tank to trap all the solids so they don’t reach the drain field. The longer the retention time, the longer the solids have to separate from the liquid, the less chance it will end up flowing into the drain field.

The Importance of Water Conservation

Increasing retention time is as easy as using less water and spreading out how you use the water. Here are a few no cost ways to allow your septic tank perform better.

Instead of doing the laundry all in one day, spread it out over the week.

Take shorter baths and showers.

Make sure the washing machine and dishwasher are full before running them.

Avoid using multiple appliance that use water at these time.

When remodeling, purchase water efficient appliances, faucets, and shower heads.

The Importance of a Healthy Septic System

Everything that goes down the sink, shower, bath tub, and toilet all end up in the septic system. Though you may not give it much thought, but it is an important investment in your home and need maintenance.
