If you need a septic system installed in Central Florida or already have one, understanding how it works will definitely pay off in the long run.

It is in your best interest to know which system is best for your home, extend its life expectancy, and know what to do if something should go wrong.

Almost half the homes in Florida have septic systems, that on average last 25 to 30 years.

There are a few different types of septic systems, they all have two main parts. A tank, where wastewater enters and the solids settle to the bottom. And a leach field, also known as a drain field, where the water disperses.

The Conventional Septic System

The traditional septic system uses gravity to carry water from the home to the septic tank and drain field. The septic tank itself is a box made fro fiberglass, polyethylene, or concrete, buried under the ground.

The solids from the waste water sinks to the bottom of the tank as sludge, while oils and grease, known as scum, rise to the top. The relatively clear water ends up in the middle and flows into the drain field. Sludge and scum build up over time and needs to be pumped out by a professional septic service every few years.

Another common type of septic system is the Aerobic Unit.

“An aerobic unit mixes air into the wastewater, which allows oxygen-loving bacteria to flourish. They break down solids much more quickly than the anaerobic bacteria in standard septic tanks, so cleaner water goes into the drain field,” according to House Logic.

“Some units also disinfect the fluid with chlorine or ultraviolet light, an advantage if you live near water, where you may face tighter environmental standards on what your system releases. An aerobic unit can serve as a substitute for a septic tank—or work in concert with one.”

It is important all septic systems have routine maintenance and pumping to ensure a long healthy life.
