So many homes in Central Florida rely on septic systems to take care of all the waste water in the home. It is a big job, to keep the system running smoothly, it requires regular maintenance.

The job of the septic tank is to separate solid waste from waste water. The solid waste sinks to the bottom of the septic tank while the oil and grease stay on top and in the middle is solid free waste water. Pipes located in the center of the septic tank take the water found in the center and filter it into the drain field. The waste found on the top and bottom contain harmful bacteria and stay inside the tank.

Get the most from your septic system with these tips

Bleach and Antibacterial soap: Both are very effective at killing the harmful and beneficial bacteria and microbes. So, when you allow them to go down the drain, it is killing the good bacteria in the septic tank, necessary to break down solids in the water.

Bacteria naturally found in the septic tank eats away at the sludge, but does not eliminate it. Pumping is a safe and effective way of removing the solids, grease, oil, and anything else that finds its way into the tank.

Know where your drain field is and take Care of it

The Environmental Protection Agency has tips on maintaining your drain field.

Plant only grass over and near your septic system. Roots from nearby trees or shrubs might clog and damage the drainfield.

• Don’t drive or park vehicles on any part of your septic system. Doing so can compact the soil in your drainfield or damage the pipes, tank, or other septic system components.

• Keep roof drains, basement sump pump drains, and other rainwater or surface water drainage systems away from the drainfield. Flooding the drainfield with excessive water slows down or stops treatment processes and can cause plumbing fixtures to back up.
