Is a foul odor or ‘rotten egg smell’ plaguing your Central Florida home or business? It is most likely coming from your septic system. What can you do about it?

Sewer gas, what is it?

Sewer gas combination of toxic and non-toxic gases. Typically formed from the decay of sewage, household waste, and sludge. It is mostly made from the odorless gas methane. As well as, hydrogen sulfide, surfer dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ammonia, and hydrogen.

How dangerous is it?

So, the colorless gas, hydrogen sulfide is what is responsible for the ‘rotten egg smell’, resulting from the decomposing waste. Fortunately, in low levels, it usually won’t make you or your family sick. But our sense of smell will deteriorate and while we won’t be able to smell the stench, but your guests will. Over time this gas can be very hazardous and flammable.

Don’t try and fix it yourself

At higher levels, hydrogen sulfide can be toxic and even fatal. So, if you were going to open your septic tank or enter the tank (this is definitely not recommended), the gas can be overwhelming and poisonous. That is why it should be left to the professionals with the proper equipment, training and experience to get the job done safely.

Where is the smell coming from?

The odor could be coming from several places. Usually, it is something along the plumbing lines isn’t operating like it should. The septic tank is full. There is a problem with the drain field. A ‘dry trap’ can occur in a drain that has not been used in a while. The water in the trap evaporates allowing sewer gas to pass through. If this is the case, you just need to run water through the drain.

Other possible causes include, a leak or break in the sewer line, clogged drains, or the septic tank itself.
