If you have a septic system in the Orlando area, Casselberry, Winter parks or Seminole county, you should know there are many things you should never put down the drain, grease, food particles, and hair. But unfortunately, the sink, bathtub and toilet can still get clogged. Commercial drain cleaners sound like a good solution, however they come with a host of their own problems, from being toxic to ground water, corrode pipes and damaging the sink/tub itself, to being detrimental to septic systems.
How to Safely Unclog a Drain
Baking Soda and Cider Vinegar
One cup baking soda to one cup cider vinegar poured down the drain creates an intense foaming action. Follow this by running hot water down the drain. Though it may take a couple of applications if the drain is still running slow, it is very effective.
Baking Soda and Lemon Juice
Again it’s one cup baking soda to one cup lemon juice, it works similar to the cider vinegar but smells a little better. Give it a few minutes to foam up then run hot water down the drain.
Vinegar, Borax and Salt
Mix half a cup of vinegar, one fourth cup of Borax and one fourth cup salt together and then pour on the clogged drain, followed by running hot water. It is effective but may take a while to unclog.
Boiling Water
If the drain is clogged due to grease, oils or fats that have solidified in the pipes, boiling water can due the trick. To avoid cracking porcelain or damaging plastics, pour the boiling water directly into the drain.
Snaking is another way to unclog a stubborn drain. If you’re not comfortable using a snake or the drain is still clogged, there may be a bigger problem and need the assistance from a professional.
