How do I know if I need a plumber or a septic service? It isn’t always easy to know. Those slow drains have become so annoying it is time to call someone, but who?

A plumber usually deals with pipes that bring clean water into your home and wastewater out. Also, water leaks, toilets, faucets, and fixtures.

A septic service deals with all the components of the septic system. From the plumbing that handles the waster water, filters, tank, and drain field.

So Who Do You Call?  Here Are A Few Ways To Tell

Check the cleanup on your septic tank

It can be found between your home and the septic tank. While sometimes it can be level to the ground, it is often a short pipe made from PVC sticking out from the ground.

If you notice any standing water when you remove the cap, you probably need a septic service. Standing water is a sign of a blockage preventing wastewater from passing through or the septic tank is overflowing.

How many drains are slow or backing up

If it is just one, it is probably a plumber. If you have several fixtures with issues or the ones closest to the ground or septic tank, you may need a septic service.

The age of the septic system

Unfortunately, septic systems don’t last forever.  If yours is on the older side, 15 to 25 years, you may need the septic service. Of course, it depends on the size of the tank, how many people living in the home and water usage. If the system is newer, less than 5 years old, you may want to call a plumber.
