If your Central Florida home has a septic tank it is important to know a few things about the system. One of the most important things to remember, the tank needs to be pumped out once every 3 to5 years to prevent problems and to keep it healthy. Though you may not think about the septic system very often, it is responsible for taking care of all the waste water in your home.
The importance of pumping out the septic tank
The job of the septic tank is to separate solid waste from waste water. The solid waste sinks to the bottom of the septic tank while the oil and grease stay on top and in the middle is solid free waste water. Pipes located in the center of the septic tank take the water found in the center and filter it into the drain field. The waste found on the top and bottom contain harmful bacteria and stay inside the tank.
Bacteria naturally found in the septic tank eats away at the sludge, but does not eliminate it. Pumping is a safe and effective way of removing the solids, grease, oil, and anything else that finds its way into the tank.
What happens if you neglect to pump the septic tank?
Unfortunately, there are some serious consequences of forgetting about the septic tank. If the sludge is allowed to build up it could end up in the drain field and contaminate the soil or end up backing up into your home.
How do I know my septic system is in trouble?
Signs your septic tank needs to be pumped includes,
Pooling water in the lawn where your septic system is located.
Unpleasant odors inside or outside your home.
Slow moving drains or toilets, indicating the septic tank is full or the pipes are clogged.
Sewage is backing up into your toilets, sinks, or bathtub.
The small price of pumping the tank can avoid the thousands of dollars on repairs, many of which could have been prevented. If you’re experiencing issues with your septic system, waiting usually makes the problems worse.
