There are over 1.5 million septic systems in Florida. Almost half of the residential septic systems fail inspection, usually from not having their septic tank pumped regularly, according to Consumer Affairs. “Did you know that you should periodically inspect your system and pump out your septic tank? If your septic system isn’t maintained, you might need to replace it, costing you many thousands of dollars. A malfunctioning system can contaminate groundwater that might be a source of drinking water. And if you sell your home, your septic system must be in good working order.”
The septic tank uses chemicals and bacteria to balance the system and break down waste material. If for some reason the chemical balance is thrown off, you could have a messy situation on your hands.
Five Things That Can Cause Septic System Problems
Not having your septic tank routinely pumped. “To prevent buildup, sludge and floating scum you will need to do periodic pumping of the septic tank. You should do the pumping every 3-5 years. Systems with electrical float switches, pumps, or mechanical components need to be inspected more often.” Consumer Affairs.
Household cleaning products going down the drain, such as bleach and antibacterial liquids, they are full of chemicals that can throw off the delicate balance.
Putting any grease down the drain. When grease solidifies it can cause a blockage.
Allowing objects that don’t break down to be put down the drain or garbage disposal. Cat litter, feminine hygiene products, plastic, and napkins, are all a disaster waiting to happen if put down the drain.
Trees and shrubs planted near the drain field can cause a host of problems, including frequent clogging.
“By taking small steps to maintain septic systems, homeowners not only protect our nation’s public health and keep our water clean, but also save money and protect their property values,” Joel Beauvais, deputy assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Water, said in a news release.
The waste management system in your home or business is a crucial component and requires maintenance for a healthy system. Taking a proactive approach to protect your investment is your best defense against sewer backups, clogged pipes, and foul odors.
