The recent advertisement of septic system additives claims to minimize the need for pumping by rejuvenating the living bacterial populating in the septic tank. Some of these products suggest they reduce the amount grease, oils and fats in the system. Unfortunately, these products don’t have any proven benefits, which leaves the advertisements very misleading since using these products can end up being a costly mistake.
The fact is, septic systems are designed to handle household waste, even some fat and grease, naturally without any assistance. Studies show, any chemicals that kill off healthy bacteria can be harmful to the septic system. A study done by the University of Arkansas found water softeners can have a devastating effect on the septic system because interfered with the tanks settling process and killed beneficial microorganisms.
The Washington State Legislature found that “most additives do not have a positive effect on the operation of on-site systems, and can contaminate groundwater aquifers, render septic drainfields dysfunctional and result in costly repairs to homeowners.” The state has since banned the use of most septic system additives.
Many additives and corrosive chemicals are toxic to the naturally occurring bacteria in the septic tank, whose job it is to break down and even consume household waste. Chemicals such as sulfuric acid, formaldehyde, bleach, and drain cleaners, not only upset the delicate balance in the system, they can also compromise the integrity of your pipes and tank.
The only thing that prevents septic tank back ups is proper maintenance and the things you put down the drains and toilets. Other considerations to take into account are the age of the septic system and drain field condition.
